A new study by Fannie Mae found that most Americans have strong aspirations of owning their own home, despite the economic and housing turmoil. The desire to buy and own a home is strong both among current homeowners and renters.
The study found that 51% of current owners and renters still want to buy a home. However, the housing crisis has affected respondents’ near-term perspectives. Fannie Mae’s National Housing Survey for the third quarter found that 33% of Americans are more likely to rent their next home. But these numbers are up from previous surveys.
Nonetheless, demographic trends such as fewer married couples and families with children are contributing to an increased willingness to rent.
